As Big Ten expansion rumors be prolonged to circulate, with Big East schools including Syracuse being named as possible targets, Tagliabue is advising the Big East on several fronts, including its television rights.
The Big East has been united with ESPN since 1979. The league's current six-year television contract with ESPN runs out after the 2013 season for football and the 2013-14 season for basketball.
"From the Big East angle, a lot of it will start with discussions with ESPN. Depending on how they go, people would look at other alternatives, but it has to start with ESPN. That's where others have ended up. The SEC ended up there, the ACC ended up there. Beyond that, it's back-breaking to speculate," Tagliabue said.
One option for the Big East would be to form its own television network, a move that has proven to be very lucrative for the Big Ten. According to a Milwaukee Log-Sentinel report , The Big Ten Network gives each school $22 million a year.
